In Loving Memory
January 7, 1925 – January 21, 2017
Willie M Blackwell Jones passed away in Mobile at the home of her beloved daughter, Chrissie, on January 21, 2017. She was 92 years old.
Born January 7, 1925, Ms. Jones, from Wetumpka, Alabama, was a resident of the Roebuck area of Birmingham for 57 years. She was a graduate of the Alabama School of Business.
Ms. Jones was a Navy WAVE Veteran of WW II, had been a member of the American Legion, General Gorges Post 1 for 49 years. She held the office of Adjutant/Finance for more than 30 years; served in the Twenty-first District as Zone Commander, the District Vice-Commander, and the District Commander; held the office of 2nd Division Commander; served on all Post committees; The Department Executive Committee and Awards Committee as well as The Americanism Committee and the National American Council. Ms. Jones also worked with the VFW and with colleges on veteran’s affairs, Girls State and Boys State.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Tonie M. Blackwell and Maybelle Carpenter Blackwell; sisters, Ila Bell Grier, Roberta Pruitt and Jerri Holloway; brothers, James Blackwell, Ernest Blackwell and Billy G. Blackwell; sister-in-law, Kathryn Jones Dahl; former spouse, Ray Jones; and great granddaughter, Samantha “Sam” Katheryn Page.
Survivors include her children, Christine “Chrissie” Lyles (George), Kay Brooks (Paul); grandchildren, Melinda Leigh King Burke (Mitchell), Michelle Taylor (Mike), Stephanie Kay (Jeremy), Sharon Carlisle (Joe), Kris E. Brooks (Jennifer), and Wade Page; great grandchildren, Jeremiah and Zakary Kay, Amber and Dianna Burke, Mackenzie and Mason Brooks, Kristian and Cori Page and Kate and Sam Carlisle; sister, Genny Spradley; sister-in-law, Dell Blackwell; there are also loved nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank caregiver, Kasheda Dortch, and the staff of Covenant Hospice for the special care they gave to their loved one.
The family also wishes to recognize the VA medical centers of Birmingham, Mobile, and Biloxi, for the medical care their mother received.
Services will be held on Friday, January 27, 2017 at 12:30 PM in Montevallo, Alabama at the Alabama National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Legion, Alabama Boy’s State, P. O. Box 1069, Montgomery, AL 36104, in Memory of Willie M. Jones.
