In Loving Memory
April 7, 1932 – February 11, 2018
Joan M. Hannan Samry, 85, passed away on February 11, 2018. A Brockton, Massachusetts native, Joan attended Brockton High School. She went to work for New England Telephone where she was a switchboard operator. In 1953, she married Francis J. Samry, a WW II veteran. The couple moved to Cape Cod and settled in Eastham, Massachusetts in the mid 1960s. While raising five children she went back to work as a waitress at Laurino’s Restaurant in Brewster, Massachusetts. Shortly after moving to Falmouth, Massachusetts in 1978, she worked for Brigg’s Answering Service. Kay Briggs operated the business out of the back of her home, and Joan plugged calls through to doctors, landscapers, bankers, funeral directors, and countless other people for more than a decade. Work brought more than a paycheck, it gave her life meaning, as did that of her children and grandchildren. After Brigg’s she went to work the switchboard at Falmouth Hospital. Widowed in 1994, she loved her job, connecting calls, paging and messaging doctors and administrators. Recently, she said, “I didn’t listen in. Well, not too much.” She retired in 2005. Prior to moving to Fairhope in 2016 she played cards, and shot pool better than most men in her building, and would earn a few dollars on side bets.
She is survived by her children, Steven F. Samry, Mark E. Samry, Laurie A. McGue, and Alan Samry of Fairhope, and Lynne M. Samry of Falmouth, Massachusetts. She is also survived by her sister Lois E. Mannion, brother Gerald E. Hannan, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday February 14, 2018 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Whit’s Frozen Custard (1204 Main St. Daphne, Alabama). Joan will be laid to rest with her husband at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts.
