In Loving Memory

June 9, 1942 – February 21, 2018

Irvington, AL

Sidney Phillip Swanson, 75, died February 21, 2018 at home in Irvington, Alabama, surrounded by family. Sid was born June 9, 1942 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Willis Roy Swanson and Naola Jeanice Rankin.

Sid attended schools in Kansas, Colorado, graduated high school from Kemper Military Academy in Missouri, and he studied at the University of Colorado.  He had an incredible way of looking at life—and he lived his life according to his own beliefs with a confidence that instilled the same in others. And he always knew how to make people feel happy and special.

He was an adventurer, an inventor, and a brilliant engineer. He travelled the world, piloted hot air balloons, was a boat captain, created several businesses, and he worked for the enjoyment of working. Whatever opportunity knocked, he was right there to go through that door–whether it was helping his uncle with harvest and manually digging postholes on a Kansas farm, fixing a boat engine for a friend, fighting forest fires, or helping with the construction of in-ground swimming pools. A period of great satisfaction in his life was his involvement in different aspects of technology, his inventions, and completing various contracts for the U.S. government.

He is survived by his spouse, Bertha Joyce Montgomery; children Scott Phillip Swanson (Cindy), Jeffrey Todd Swanson (Tracy), Nicole Christine Kistler, and Kelly Anna Kistler;  grandchildren Sean Swanson, Will Swanson, Ella Swanson, Lia Bacon, Monroe Mortara, and Carter Mortara; and siblings Susan Swanson Thornton (Michael), Sally Swanson Paton (Thomas), and Stephanie Swanson Czerniecki (Frank). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, and friends all over the globe. He was proceeded in death by his father Willis (1-25-1970) and mother Nonie (8-18-1991).

A private family service will be held at a later date.  Expressions of condolence may be made at  Arrangements handled by Hughes Funeral Home, 7951 American Way, Daphne, AL.
