In Loving Memory

November 18, 1922 – March 5, 2018

Fairhope, AL

Ilse Schulze, 95, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2018 in Fairhope, AL. Born in Germany, Ilse grew up with 4 siblings, being the second oldest.  She went to German schools, finishing through the college level.

In 1939, at the beginning of the war, there was no possibility for professional training.  Women had to do work toward the war effort, taking the place of the men who served in the army.  After the war, she trained as a physical therapist but found no work in Germany and went abroad to Sweden, then England and Canada.  The Canadian Red Cross was looking for physios to rehabilitate poor Moroccans, who had consumed contaminated machine oil.  She worked then for the British Government in Hong Kong for three years.

In 1968 Ilse married Karl Schulze. After his retirement from Michigan State University, they found Fairhope as a place to stay.  Karl enjoyed sailing, playing tennis and being sociable.  Ilse helped to open the physical therapy department in Thomas Hospital.

The house was open to friends and family and they, of course, visited the old country.  When Karl died in 1983, Ilse was in good contact with the Fairhopians, sang in the Methodist Church Choir and Eastern Shore Choral Society.  She was pink lady at Thomas Hospital, attended art lessons, and always loved gardening.   She celebrated life and shared it with her devoted friends and family.

Ilse is preceded in death by her husband, Karl Schulze; her parents, August Hilgemann and Helene Hilgemann; two brothers, Friedrish Hilgemann and August Hilgemann.

She is survived by her son, Erik Schulze; sister, Gertrud Hilgemann and her brother, Gunther Hilgemann; other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Monday, March 12, 2018 at Fairhope United Methodist Church, 155 S. Section St, Fairhope, AL, 36532. The family will receive friends at 10:00am with Dr. Ed Glaize officiating. Expressions of condolence may be offered at www.hughesfh.com.
