Carl David Slater, age 84, passed away on April 13, 2018 in Spanish Fort, Alabama. He was born in Moundsville, West Virginia on October 26, 1933 to William Alvan Slater and Jessie Craig Slater.
Dr. Slater graduated from Moundsville High School, received his undergraduate degree from West Virginia University and his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, in organic chemistry. He was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and, in later years, research fellowships at Indiana University and Rice University.
He worked in industry briefly, then taught at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND and Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis). He served as chairman of the Department of Physical Sciences at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, KY; Dean of Arts and Sciences at Washburn University in Topeka, KS; and Chemistry Department Administrator at Michigan State University.
Throughout the years, Professor Slater enjoyed running, bicycling, gym exercises, golfing, reading, listening to music, and strumming his guitar.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, infant Ruth Slater. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Glenda Richmond Slater, sons Keith and Derek, daughters-in-law Kate Yoder Slater and Mary Ellen Mitchell Slater, granddaughters Ky Slater and Elizabeth Slater and grandson Jesse Carl Slater, his brother, Dr. Paul Vernon Slater, and his sister-in-law Joyce Richmond Jones.
The family very much appreciates the care and support given by the nursing staff at Westminster Village in Spanish Fort, by Restore Therapy, and by Kindred Hospice.
