In Loving Memory

April 1, 1932 – September 17, 2018

Mobile, AL

Reverend Douglas James Johns of Mobile, Alabama received his final promotion to his heavenly reward on September 17, 2018, surrounded by his loving wife and family.  He was eighty-six years old.

Doug was born in Talladega, Alabama on April 1, 1932, to the late Allen Clifton Johns and Mary Francis Barber. He grew up in Saks, Alabama where he lived until the age of eighteen when he dutifully joined the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. During his four years of active duty, he held church services aboard the ship.  Once he was discharged, he continued to serve in the ministry in a far greater capacity.

Doug’s great loves were Jesus and his family. As a Minister in the Church of God, he led several congregations across the state of Alabama and served in multiple state-level administrative positions. He was passionate about sharing the hope of the gospel and touched hundreds of lives throughout his fifty-four-year career.

He was blessed to have not one, but three great love stories during his lifetime.  Doug lost two wives to cancer. He is now reunited with Betty Black Johns, married for 25 years, and Aurelia Amick Johns married for 28 years. He is also preceded in death by brother Charles Edward Johns and sister Susie Opal Barrett.

He is survived by his adoring wife Pat Dalton Johns, sons Michael Johns (Cathy) and Jim Johns (Martha), step-children Michael Dalton (Robin), Lisa Guarino (Joseph), and J.C. Dalton (Gina) and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. As the patriarch of the Johns family, Doug’s convictions and principles shaped multiple generations, and will to come. His family is left with not only the legacy of a godly man, but a tender, caring, and funny father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

A celebration service will be held at 7:00pm, Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Forest Hill Church of God, 5508 Moffett Road, Mobile, AL 36618, and a graveside service at Anniston Memorial Gardens, 4000 US-431, Anniston, AL 36206, at 3:00pm, Friday, September 21, 2018. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Forest Hill Church of God Missions, 5508 Moffett Road, Mobile, AL, 36618. Expressions of condolence may be offered at www.hughesfh.com.
