In Loving Memory

November 13, 1925 – October 8, 2018

Mobile, AL

Dorothy Geiger Stevens, 92, of Mobile, AL, died October 8, 2018. She was the daughter of Walter Ludlow Geiger and Malissa Breland.  Dorothy passed on while receiving compassionate and loving care from family, caregivers, and staff at Palm Gardens Health. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Harold W. Stevens, Sr. She is survived by her sons Harold Stevens, Jr. and Gerald Stevens and his wife Jean Maddox Stevens, and daughter Cynthia Stevens Hyde and her husband James R. Hyde, Jr., grandchildren, Steven L. Hyde, Andrew J. Hyde and his wife Becky Baltrusaitis Hyde and many other family members.

Dorothy was one of ten children who grew up on a farm in Lucedale where her love of gardening was born. Her beautifully landscaped yards provided sanctuary for birds with their well-kept feeders and birdbaths. Exquisite fresh flower arrangements from her yard always graced her home. She also showed natural creativity as an interior decorator, transforming even mundane items like a piece of driftwood into works of art. Having put college on hold to raise her children, she finished her baccalaureate and then obtained a master’s in speech therapy. As a gifted teacher, she changed the lives of many children.  She was a gourmet cook who could recreate any dish she tasted, but her family’s favorite was her seafood gumbo.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:30 pm, Saturday, October 27, 2018, at the home of Cynthia and Jim Hyde in Mobile.  Instead of flowers please make donations to Rocky Creek Baptist Church, 2165 Rocky Creek Road, Lucedale, MS 39452.  Expressions of condolence may be made at www.hughesfh.com.  Arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home & Crematory, 7951 American Way, Daphne, AL.
