Tribute

Andrew Steven “Drew” Powell, Sr., a lifelong resident of Mobile, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at the age of 62.

He is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Kathy Bates Powell; his children, Katie (Trent) Perera and Andrew S. (Mackenzie) Powell, Jr., both of Mobile; stepchildren, Alexander (Genevieve) Kelley of Frederick, MD and Carson Bates of Mobile; four step-grandchildren; Anna Gray, Madeline, Jack, and Thomas. He is also survived by his mother, Patricia Powell; siblings, Arthur T. Powell, III of Mobile and Angela (Tommy) Beech of Semmes; along with other family members and friends.

Drew is preceded in death by his father, Arthur T. Powell, Jr. and his grandparents, Arthur & Ruby Powell and Juanita Cate.

Drew was born on July 19, 1961 and spent most of his childhood in Prichard, Alabama. He attended Mary G. Montgomery High School. After graduating high school, Drew attended Auburn University where he graduated in 1984 with a B.S. in Human Movement Sciences. After briefly working as a teacher, Drew joined his father at Davidson & Company in 1985. Drew had a prolific career as an insurance adjuster handling various types of claims and eventually served as the President and General Manager of Davidson & Company.

Drew’s love for the great outdoors blossomed from an early age, whether he was hunting in the serene woods, casting a line into the rippling waters, or tending to his beloved vegetable garden. Drew was an avid golfer, but most of all he enjoyed any opportunity to spend time with his children or grandchildren. On any given weekend, one could find him “piddling” in his garage working on various projects. Over the years, he built furniture, repaired tools, or fixed just about anything he set his mind to. One of his favorite projects was a beautifully handcrafted playhouse he built for his granddaughter, Anna Gray, who affectionately referred to him as “Gee Gee.” Drew’s passion for history was equally profound. A voracious reader, he immersed himself in the pages of countless Civil War books, eager to unravel the mysteries of the past.

Drew was not only a devoted father to his children, but also a dedicated member of his church community at Christ Anglican Church and a member of Bible Study Fellowship. Drew attended a missionary trip to Rwanda with his church, where he devoted his time and energy to helping those in need. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him through both joyous and challenging times.

A memorial service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Christ Anglican Church, 3275 Halls Mill Road in Mobile, AL. There will be a time of visitation prior to the service to begin at 12PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Drew’s honor may be made to Christ Anglican Church or Wings of Life Recovery.

Hughes Funeral Home, 26209 Pollard Road, Daphne, AL, is assisting the family.

Drew was eight years old when I first met him, he loved his turtles and Auburn football. I will always be thankful for him and the way he respected me when we would randomly meet over the years. A sweet and multitalented gentleman who will be saving me a seat at one of the greatest tables in Heaven.
My love to you and your family….until we meet again.

Drew and Kathy were always so kind to my children and me. We enjoyed many afternoons in their backyard playing in the beautiful playhouse that Drew built. We are so sad to hear of his passing and are saying many prayers for him and his family.
