Charles Arthur “Charlie” Donahue, Jr, age, 75, a resident of Pensacola, FL and later Mobile, AL, passed away Monday, August 28, 2017.  He was born in Louisville, KY to Charles Arthur Donahue and Mary Angela Boone Donahue on August 17, 1942.  He enjoyed the sport of boxing at a very young age, so much so, that he joined the sport himself.  He began training in his hometown alongside Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali), with whom he was a frequent sparring partner.  In 1965, Charlie received the Governor’s award as “Best Amateur Boxer” in the state of Kentucky.  He was a combat Veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War.  Upon returning, he was employed by the US Postal Service.  When Charlie became ill, he moved to the Gulf Coast area to be near his “baby sister” Julie, who would continue as his caregiver.  Preceding him in death are both of his parents and his sister, Patricia Donahue. 

Surviving are his two sisters, Julia (Tim) Donahue-Dyer and Margaret (Steve) Wright; four brothers, Lt. Gen. (Ret) William J. (Connie) Donahue, Daniel (Barrie) Donahue, Michael (Marjorie) Donahue and Thomas (Rosemarie) Donahue; also surviving are many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A Military Honors Ceremony and inurnment will be held at 2:30pm, September 29, 2017 at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 34904 State Hwy 225, Spanish Fort, AL 36527.  Expressions of condolence may be offered at  Arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home & Crematory, 7951 American Way, Daphne, AL 36526.
