William David “Dave” Wagner, 68, of Wilmer, AL, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2016 at his home with his family by his side.  He was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania to Elwood McAlister Wagner and Mary Wilner Eckenrode Wagner.  He graduated from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and Business.  Dave was a veteran of the United States Army serving his country proudly in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot.  He loved telling stories of his experiences during the war that were so interesting and intriguing that you felt as if you’d been there.  After six years of service in the military, in 1972 he was honorably discharged as a captain and then continued his service in the Alabama Army National Guard in Mobile.

A generous man with a big heart, he was quite a gentleman to all he met, always encouraging to others and helping people where he could, whether by word or deed.  He even kept extra cash at all times in his pocket and if he found someone in need, he would gladly share it with them.  He made everybody around him feel comfortable, loved, and special.  His wife was a travel nurse for many years and he had the wonderful opportunity to travel with her.  He was employed for over twenty years in sales and marketing of pharmaceuticals and supplies within the medical industry throughout the southeastern region, primarily for Johnson & Johnson, but also Searle Laboratories, Analytab Products, Inc. and bioMerieux Vitek.  It was in 1993, that began his own business doing the same.  He was always quite progressive in his career and always with leading edge technology striving to serve his clients with utmost excellence.   Dave was a family man who treasured each and every day with them and loved sharing stories of his childhood.  His grandchildren were in his heart of hearts and he had a very special love for them.  He believed they could never learn enough and enjoyed teaching them new things whenever he could.  He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jacquelyn Elenz.

Surviving are his loving wife of 22 years, Rhonda Leigh Dodd Wagner; three sons, Sean Wagner, Chris (Jennifer) Wagner and Josh Wagner; three stepsons, Marlon Stiers, Gavin Stiers and Brian Stiers; sister, Debra Hirsch; also, his four beloved grandchildren and many other family members and friends.

Services will be held on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 12:30pm at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort, AL.  Officiating will be Chaplain Ron Pierce.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to:   Fisher House of Mississippi, 509 Fisher Street, Keesler Air Force Base, MS 39534.  Expressions of condolence may be offered at Hughes Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 American Way, Daphne, AL  36526.

I was sorry I could not be present on Friday, I volunteer at Sacred Heart Hospital on that day. He is among other classmates now.
