In Loving Memory

David R. Vial

January 1, 1955 - August 25, 2023

Tribute

David Randolph Vial, native of Mobile, AL, entered eternal rest on August 25, 2023, at age 68, after a tenacious and courageous 3-year battle with cancer.

David loved his family, many friends and above all the Lord, with his whole heart. He lived a full, wonderful life but was not ready to give up his time on Earth because he still had so much to live for. In true Vial form, he fought to his very last breath.

David was a devoted husband and proud Papa D, never missing a chance to show off his beautiful family. Always true to himself, David will be remembered most for his big, unique personality. He was always collecting new friends wherever he went, even in the front yard with his sidekick Macaw, Titan. His home was a haven for many rescued pets throughout the years, and despite his complaints, he loved them all dearly, even the backyard raccoon clan. David was an enthusiastic Alabama football fan, and his roaring “Roll Tide” and howls at the TV, which could be heard across the neighborhood, will be greatly missed this season and on. New Years Day will never be the same without him to celebrate his birthday.

David was a graduate of Murphy High School, Class of 1973. He attended Providence School of Nursing and continued his education at UAB where he received a Certificate of Nurse Anesthesia in 1980. David was a dedicated, hard worker and practiced as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist for over 40 years all throughout the state of Alabama.

He was a faithful servant of Christ and a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, where he attended grammar school and also married his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 48 years, Tierney.

David was preceded in death by his father, Louis A. Vial, Sr. and mother, Bernadette Rose Vial. He is survived by his wife, Tierney Toifel Vial; three children, Brett (Toni) Vial, Laura (Ched) Graham, and Leslie Vial; five grandchildren, Zann Vial, Ava Vial, Ethan Graham, Evan Graham, and Olivia Graham; his brothers, Louis Vial, Jr., Sam (Sheila) Vial, and Joe (Janet) Vial; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday, September 1, 2023, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 217 S. Sage Avenue in Mobile, AL. The Rosary will be recited prior to mass at 9:30 AM. Flowers can be sent to St. Pius X Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of the Mobile Animal Shelter, 855 Owens Street, Mobile, AL 36689; 251-259-6531; or with Paypal FOMAS855 or at http://www.fomaspets.org/donate

Expressions of condolences for the family may be made at www.hughesfh.com. Hughes Funeral Home, 26209 Pollard Road, Daphne, AL, is assisting the family.

David, I am so blessed to have known you. Your passion and love for the Lord and the Catholic Church on Earth was hugely inspiring on me. Noah and I and Dan and Jonah will always remember our time trout fishing in Tennessee. You always spoke about the different members of your family and it seemed like I knew them personally. You are ok bc you ate the Body and drank the Blood of Christ! And I hope to see you again… David Celeski (Marshall Medical Center North-Guntersville)

Words can’t define how tough, courageous and determined Dave was. His love of God and family was certainly the fuel that provided him strength and endurance. We will all see him soon along with all of those that went before us. I know his family and friends are so proud of him and will miss him until we also crossover. Until then there is a wonderful celebration in heaven.
Love you Dave and thanks for your contribution to all that knew you. Have a blast and we’ll see you soon.

Tierney, my family and I just found this out tonight. We are so sorry. He was such a good friend to Terry since their years at St. Pius X. David was the last friend Terry talked to before he passed and he was always so happy to hear from him. My love and prayers to you and your family.

    Tiereny and family,
What a pleasure to have known David! His generous and thoughtful lifestyle was an inspiration, and I’m so grateful he initiated our St. Pius 8th grade class reunion this past year. Brilliant! So many friendships have been renewed from that single event!

David, my heart was broken to learn from a mutual friend, of your passing. My prayers for you and your wife/family during your difficult time were many. We talked and texted many times, and it was quite clear your faith and relationship with God was on solid ground and carrying you through the anguish. When the responses to texts stopped, I knew you were physically drained and tired. I know God has you in His arms. I hope your family is drawn closer to each other through the love you showed and left in their hearts. This life is more than flesh and bone. Your spirit lives on in those of us lucky to have known you.
    God bless my brother.
