Devery P. Jenkins, age 41, of Spanish Fort, AL, passed away on June 30, 2026, after a motor vehicle accident in Saraland, AL.
Devery was born on April 2, 1985, to Rhonda (Chapman) Freeman and Douglas P. Jenkins in Orlando, FL, during Doug’s Navy service. The family relocated to their hometown of Mobile, AL, when Devery was 5 years old. After Devery graduated from Baker High School in 2003, he went on to serve with the United States Marine Corps from 2003 to 2007.
Devery received numerous medals for his combat action in Operation Freedom and associated conflicts during his service from 2003 to 2007 and was honorably discharged.
Devery lived in Fayetteville, NC, and studied Funeral Science briefly before relocating to Mobile, AL in 2008. He proceeded to earn his A.S. in petroleum technology at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Devery went on to work at Chevron offshore and Chevron Refinery in Pascagoula in 2010 for 6 years. Afterwards, he returned to college at the University of South Alabama and earned his double B.S. in History and Secondary Education with numerous honors and awards. In 2020, Devery and his family moved from Mobile, AL, to Spanish Fort, AL, where he is best known for teaching 8th-grade history and math, but also taught debate, choir and science when needed, at Spanish Fort Middle School.
Devery is survived by his loving wife, Anna; their children, Freya and Eirene; his father, Douglas Jenkins and stepmother, Heather Jenkins; his mother, Rhonda Freeman and stepfather, David Freeman; his siblings, Kayla Jenkins Wooten and family, Wesley Jenkins and family, Preston Mcgraw and family, Chris Mcgraw and family, Alyse Jenkins, Ashlynn Jenkins, Michael Freeman and family, Meaghan Freeman and family, and Peyton Freeman and family; his sister-in-law, Katie Smith and family; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Kirkland; along with other family members and many friends.
On Friday, July 10, 2026, Devery will be layed to rest at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 34904 State Hwy 225, Spanish Fort, AL at 11AM. A memorial service will be held later that day at Destiny Church, 28328 County Road 13, Daphne, AL, at 2:30PM. The family welcomes everyone to come and celebrate his life and legacy.

What an exceptional man, husband, father and son. He will be missed by family, friends and all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him. My sincere condolences to his beloved family.

Fair winds and following seas, Devery. I had the pleasure of serving with him in the Marine Corps.
He was a confident Marine, who was firm and fair. He knew his Artillery knowledge well and would often be kicking classes to the junior Marines about Gunnery, Round/Fuze combinations, and all general sequences of the gun. We often spent time trading Chief responsibilities and I learned a lot from him.
He was an asset on the gun line, and a good friend while off of it. I will hold his memories close to my heart. My sincerest condolences to his family.

I am heartbroken about the tragic loss of Devery. No words can truly ease the pain of losing someone so young and full of promise, especially in such a sudden way. Please know that I’m holding you close in my thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time, especially today and tomorrow as you say your goodbyes and celebrate his life.
Your son was obviously a bright light in this world and in the lives of so many students he touched as a teacher. He made a real difference, and that legacy will live on through everyone whose lives he changed.
His honorable military service is unmatched by millions in this country. And I especially appreciate the Marines more than you could ever know.

My heart and love is poured out to all of Devery’s family, loved ones, and friends. I had the privilege of knowing Devery while he was in elementary school. He entered the same class as my son. They quickly became friends, and I enjoyed watching their kind and compassionate friendship grow. I’m sure he showed kindness and compassion to all who entered in his life. My prayers for your peace.
