Douglas Lee Holton, 64, passed away unexpectedly on June 22, 2026.
Born to Nancy and Hal in Burlington, North Carolina, Doug spent his early years in Winston-Salem and Greensboro playing sports and riding his bike across town and back. The family moved to Louisville, Kentucky as he started high school and relocated again to Vestavia Hills, Alabama just before his senior year. At Vestavia, Doug played football and golf and developed a lifelong love of sports. Golf remained one of his favorite pastimes throughout life, providing him with both enjoyment and fellowship.
Doug graduated from Auburn University where he made lifelong friendships in Sigma Chi Fraternity and met his wife. He built a successful career as a Sports Broadcaster doing television and radio and later launched his own media company. His passion for athletics and storytelling allowed him to connect with countless fans throughout his career. He remained a dedicated supporter of Auburn athletics and enjoyed seeing both his daughters graduate from Auburn. Yet, he never lost his first love for the North Carolina Tar Heels – “I’m a Tar Heel born; I’m a Tar Heel bred.” He was a devoted fan of the men’s basketball team and enjoyed traveling to see them play.
Above all else, Doug cherished his family. He is survived by his wife, Lou Ann Holton; his daughters, Annagail Holton and Audra Holton; his sister, Karen Holton; and many extended family members and friends.
He will be remembered for his commitment to his family and friends, his passion for sports and his ingenious sense of humor. The memories he created, the lives he touched and the legacy he leaves behind will endure for years to come. May he rest in peace.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, at Hughes Funeral Home, 26209 Pollard Road, Daphne, AL. There will be a time of visitation before the service beginning at 10:30AM, followed by the service at 12PM.

Doug and I were in the same pledge class at the Sigma Chi house at Auburn in 1980. He was always fun to be around and a good guy. My sympathies to his family.

I hated to hear about Doug’s passing. Way too young! We were fraternity brothers and I’m so glad I got the chance to know him! I have a ton of great memories from our time together at Auburn. Our prayers are with Lou Ann and their girls. In hoc my Brother.

What a great guy! Knew him at Sigma Chi in Auburn, we both lived in Vestavia. Doug was a good friend and a wonderful guy! Thoughts and prayers to his family. . I will miss him.
Doug was a pleasure to be around, for his quirky humor and his wanting to know your opinion or funny take on whatever the topic might be. I, too, met him at Auburn via Sigma Chi Fraternity. He used his steady anchorman voice for great comedic effect.
As avid golfers, we played a number of times at courses near Auburn while in college. In the early ‘90s. we got together with a few other Sigs for a fun golf trip to Panama City.
Indeed, Doug was a memorable person at Auburn University and beyond. His adventures at the 1982 Tangerine Bowl still get me laughing. He certainly made his mark as a sports reporter/anchor in the state of Alabama.
