Tribute

Roy Eugene “Gene” Guy, beloved husband, devoted father, and long-time resident of Spanish Fort, AL, died Tuesday, March 23, 2021 after a lengthy illness.

The fourth of twelve children, Gene was born in Mobile on March 12, 1944 to J.C. and Marie Guy. In 1957, the family moved to Atmore where he excelled at basketball, football, baseball, and any other sport he tried. He also met the love of his life, Dolly, whom he married on May 24, 1970 after they graduated from Auburn University. Although his degree was in ornamental horticulture, Gene became a computer programmer at GM&O Railroad and retired from Mobile Infirmary after 20 years of service.

He loved to pick on those he loved most and there was no better sound than when he got tickled. He built his own greenhouse, basketball goal and his neighborhood Memorial Garden. He coached Dixie Youth Baseball and helped start the Spanish Fort Youth Basketball League. Gene enjoyed bedtime stories, Krispy Kreme doughnuts and singing songs he learned from listening to the Grand Ole Opry. A life-long fan of all things Auburn, he was thrilled to see the “Prayer at Jordan-Hare” in person.

Gene loved Dolly with his whole heart and was proud of the strength, courage, and compassion she demonstrated throughout his illness.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Thomas Murray Guy.

He is survived by his wife, Dolly Daniels; his children, Amber Suzanne (Joe Wiseman) and Daniel Eugene (Esther); ten siblings and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made to The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration at www.theaftd.org.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 30 at Hughes Funeral Home, 26209 Pollard Rd Daphne, AL, with Elders Larry and Shelia Steiner officiating. Visitation begins at 5:00 p.m. with the service following at 6 p.m. We ask all attendees to please wear a mask and observe social distancing.
