George Eugene Dana “Grandpa” passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 11, 2023. 

George was born on May 25, 1936, in Fairhope, Alabama. After spending his childhood in Fairhope, he enlisted in the military. He began his military career in the Air Force for six years and then he entered the U.S. Navy, where he served until retirement working primarily with nuclear weapons.   After retirement, he returned to his hometown of Fairhope where he spent his days enjoying his hobbies; bow hunting and deep-sea fishing with his family and friends, and just being on the water was his favorite hobby. George was passionate about spending time with his family and closest friends out on the water, making memories trying to catch the big one or just trolling. When he was not fishing, he loved spending his later years having coffee or lunch with his granddaughter and taking walks on the Fairhope Pier, talking about his adventures in the military, racing cars in Germany, skydiving in Roswell or how Fairhope used to be “back in the day”.  And even at 86, he loved Skyping with long distance friends. He also spent time being an Auxiliary Volunteer at Thomas Hospital.

George is proceeded in death by his parents, George Edward Dana and Clarence Gilmore Dana; his daughter, Deborah Dana Hilliard; and his favorite dog, HoBo. 

George is survived by his granddaughter, Wendie Dana Hilliard, along with other family members and friends. 

He will be greatly missed and always loved and remembered. 

His family wishes to give special thanks to the staff of the Thomas Hospital SICU and MICU in the final week of his well lived life.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, May 22, 2023, at 11:00AM, at the Dana Family Plot at Point Clear Cemetery, 5897 Pine Grove Drive in Fairhope, AL.
