Houston “Hoot” Gibson

March 7, 1938 - January 11, 2024


Houston Edwin Gibson “Hoot”, a native of Mobile, AL, and a resident of Daphne, AL for the past 50 years, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at the age of 85.

Hoot attended Gulfport Military Academy in Biloxi, MS and graduated from Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, TN.  He served in the US Air Force, stationed at Orly Air Base in Paris, France. 

Hoot was one of the first 4 year graduating class from the University of South Alabama.  He graduated with a BA Degree in History.  He was a founding member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity while at South Alabama.  He began his career at Fairhope High School, as a teacher and ended as a counselor from George Hall/Palmer Pillans in 2000.

Hoot was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Daphne, a member of the Inca’s Mardi Gras Association, and St. Paul’s Men’s Group.

Hoot devoted his time to his children, grandchildren, fishing, and Bama football. May it be noted on the day of his death, Alabama also ended an era.

Hoot was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey M. Gibson; mother, Millie M. Miles; father, Houston E. Gibson; sister, Helen Ely Cummings; and brothers, Jay A. Gibson and Guy E. Gibson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Joanne Cox Gibson; son, John C. (Jessica) Gibson; grandchildren, Michael, Grayson, and Meredith Gibson, all of Daphne, AL, Riley (Skylar) Williamson, of Roanoke AL and Ryan Sheppard, of California; brother-in-law, Leland L. Cox (Phyllis); and his lap-baby, Boo; along with other family members and friends.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 28788 N. Main Street, in Daphne, AL, at 11AM on Thursday, January 18,2024.  There will be a time of visitation before the service to begin at 10AM in the Malone Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice or to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 28788 N. Main Street, Daphne, AL 36526.

Expressions of condolences for the family may be made at Hughes Funeral Home, 26209 Pollard Road, Daphne, AL, is assisting the family.

    Sending my deepest sympathies.
    Hoot was a devoted family man. He made many good memories with his family. I remember John was holding Meredith , we were on a long pier at the beach, and the look of recognition when she spotted Paw Paw It was Priceless She was 11 month old.
