Lyda Love Haynes Prendergast, age 86, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 in Mobile, Alabama. She was born September 29, 1931 in Blaine, Mississippi to Avery Purcell Haynes and Effie Fisackerly Haynes. She earned a B.A. in English from Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, Mississippi and an M.A. in Psychology from the American University, and before her marriage was employed as an English and Spanish teacher at Lee High School in Columbus. She married the late George Gregory Prendergast of St. Louis, Missouri, an officer in the U. S. Air Force, in Greenwood, Mississippi on July 7, 1956. Together they raised three children and lived in Japan, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico among other locations. She was employed for many years as a floral designer at Cleveland Florist and was a member of Huntleigh Woods Garden Club, Waves water aerobics, Retired Military Officers, MUW Alumni Association, and the Baldwin Senior Travelers. She was a parishioner of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Mobile for forty years.
She is survived by her children, Avery Alice (Prendergast) Fick, Amy Catherine Prendergast, and George Gregory (Greg) Prendergast, a son-in-law, Geoffrey Fick and daughter-in-law, June (Toscano) Prendergast, and her grandsons, Michael Layne Fick, Stephen Francis Fick, and Joseph George Fick, and granddaughter-in-law, Judith Anne (Dansby) Fick.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30pm, Monday, January 22, 2018 at Corpus Christi Church, 6300 McKenna Dr, Mobile, AL, 36608. Visitation will be at 11:30am. A lunch will be provided for all immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local food bank or homeless shelter of your choice.
