Martha Ann Lay, a resident of Point Clear, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at the age of 79.

Martha had lived in the same house since 1970.  She was a housewife, and master cook.  She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends.  She cooked professionally for Gambino’s Restaurant in Magnolia Springs, Wallace Grocery in Point Clear, and Ponderosa Supper Club in Fairhope. Martha was awarded the World’s Best Choir Mom from Fairhope High School.  She also did childcare for a number of children in her home over the years.  Many still look up to her as a surrogate mom. She fed anyone that was hungry, whether they were under her care or not.  She also enjoyed collecting various whatnots over the years and liked to do word search and find-a-word puzzles.

Martha is preceded in death by her husband, David Hubert Lay; her mother, Eveline Fumea; father, George Albert Henderson, Jr.; grandparents, John Henry Cochran and Ester Jay Cochran, and George Albert Henderson, Sr. and Ella Henderson; two daughters, Channel Lee Stout and Symantha Jewel Stephens; great-granddaughter, Kirkley Marie Trott; uncles, AJ Cochran, Johnny Cochran, JD Cochran, Delone Henderson and Max Henderson; and aunts, Marie Simmons, Betty Flowers, Catherine Stofer, Faye Henderson, Louise Henderson and Eleonor Henderson.

She is survived by two sons and three daughters, Ronald (Sherry) Avera of Fairhope, AL, Donald Avera of Fairhope, AL, Angela Avera of Pensacola, Fl, Tammy (Roger) Seymore of Theodore, AL and Robin (Mike) Maljevac of Jackson, FL; sixteen grandchildren, David Trott, Christopher Avera, Donald Trott, Jamie Lay, Jeffery Lay, Symantha Paligo, Christopher Moles, Kayla Lay, Justice Avera, Elizabeth Vite, Matthew Helm, Liberty Williams, Timothy Avera, Kristina Shaw, Tiffany Branson, and Susan Maljevac; seventeen great-grandchildren, Leslie, Chloe, Raylan, Emma, Alice, Destiny, Channel, Melody, Natalie, Harmony, Jeffery, Andromeda, Eden, Catherine, Abigail and Timothy; three sisters, Brenda Gates of Livingston, TX, Betty Jean Toler of Daphne, AL, and Debra Martin of Fairhope, AL; and special friends, Gary Quay of Seminole, AL, Paul and Virginia Cumbie of Fairhope, AL, Shorty Philips of Sardis, AL, Max Duke of Mobile, AL, Shannon Bishop of Fairhope, AL, Rev. John Burkhardt and so many more.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at 11AM at Hughes Funeral Home, 26209 Pollard Road, Daphne, AL. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation before the service to begin at 10AM.

    We who love dear Martha and Hubert are so blessed. Her hugs were special and she was giving to us all. Her and aunt Nelly was sent to us by God. She is walking with a angels now. They both cooked with love.
    I have co many memories of all the family. Dink. Becky who God sent to us via big mama. All the Hayes family, including the twins, loved these women dearly. I feel so lonely now. Godspeed to all her loved ones. I have been truly blessed.
