Maynard J. O’Hara, a native of Spencer, Iowa and a resident of Daphne, Alabama, passed away on Friday, June 24, 2022, at the age of eighty-six.
Maynard had a 26-year career in the military, including 4 years in the Air Force and 22 years in the Mississippi National Guard, and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant. He received the Mississippi Magnolia Medal for distinguished service to the state. He also had a long, successful career in the insurance business as a senior manager. Maynard was a sports lover. He coached summer baseball for years and was an umpire/referee for high school football, basketball, and baseball, as well as college football. He was also a music lover and sang in the Jackson, MS Barbershop chorus for years. He played the guitar and sang. He also would write songs and enjoyed playing and singing for family and friends. He loved to tell stories and he had a great sense of humor and was very quick witted. He loved to laugh and to make others laugh. His greatest joy was being surrounded by his family and friends.
Maynard is preceded in death by his father Maynard Harvey O’Hara, mother, Elizabeth O’Hara Dewitt; brothers, Harold, Orvan, Orville, Kenneth, Bob, Don, and David DeWitt; and sisters, Delores, and Dawn.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley Bentz O’Hara; children, Kevin O’Hara of Daphne, AL and Ellece O’Hara of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Lewis Brown, Michael, and John O’Hara; great-grandchildren, Isabel and Charlie Brown; sister, Jacqueline Dewitt Miller; along with other family members and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 1, 2022, at Christ the King Catholic Church, at 11:00 AM. There will be a time of visitation before the service beginning at 10:00 AM. Celebrant will be Rev. Matthew O’Connor. Interment will follow at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort at 12:30 PM.
