Philip Rollins Hanlon was born on March 2, 1950, in Baltimore, MD, and grew up in St. Louis, MO, the oldest of eight children to Drs. C Rollins and Margaret Hanlon.
Philip was an avid student, an outdoorsman, a lacrosse enthusiast, and a musician, playing drums in a high school rock cover band. After graduating from Duke University in North Carolina, Philip followed in his parents’ footsteps and received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. After an internship year at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA, he completed his residency in anesthesia at the University of Florida, beginning his career in anesthesia in 1978.
Philip married Mary Charlene Hanlon (nee Henry) in 1977 and moved to Mobile, Alabama in 1984. Philip was a faculty anesthesiologist and residency program director at the University of South Alabama until 1992, later joining Anesthesia Services and then founding Anesthesia Care, PC, in 2003. He faithfully served his community, providing care to his patients and friendship to his colleagues for many years. Philip was also known for his love for trivia, playing (at least!) weekly for over 20 years with his Big Train trivia squad.
Philip is survived by his wife, Charlene; his four children, Matthew (44), Lindsey (42), Christopher (40), and Angela (37) and their spouses; his twelve beloved grandchildren, ages 17-2; as well as his brother, Richard; and sisters, Christine, Martha, Mary, and Sarah.
He was a devoted father and grandfather, rarely missing events big or small, and a caring big brother to his younger siblings. Philip will be fondly remembered for his quick wit, insatiable curiosity, generosity, and deep devotion to his family, friends, and patients. He passed from this world to the next surrounded by his loving wife and children, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, November 3, 2025, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Daphne AL. There will be a time of visitation before the service beginning at 10AM, with the service to follow at 11AM. A luncheon will be held after the service at 12:30PM. Anyone wishing to attend are welcome.

My fondest memories of Philip were his facial expressions of admiration and pride watching his family members during various activities. His upbeat, positive attitude about everything is a great lesson for all of us. God be with you, Philip!
So sorry for your loss. He was a good man and only wish I had gotten more opportunities to spend time with him.
I have known Phillip for 18 years since relocating to Mobile in 2007. His wisdom and outlook on life greatly enriched my life. I will miss him!

My husband was devoted to his family. He encouraged them to be their best self. He was very proud of his children and loved his 12 grandchildren. I will miss him deeply. But his legacy lives on in his children and grandchildren. He was greeted in heaven by his parents and two brothers. I am sure he is scheming some tricks with his brothers or challenging them with trivia questions. I hoped we would celebrate 50 years of marriage but God called him home. He will be forever in our hearts. I love you Philip. Rest in Paradise.
His steady, thoughtful, open, egalitarian nature and leadership combined with the talented people in the anesthesia department that he led gave me a lifelong interest, study, and ability in airway management and ventilation, He made the difference in so many cases in morbidity and mortality with his inspiration was over my shoulder, but he many years and miles away.

It was my good fortune to meet Philip when he arrived as a faculty member at USAMC. We enjoyed working together and often recalled the many good, as well as, bad times we experienced growing-up in St. Louis, MO. He was self-confident, well trained and had the ability to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of those around him; an exceptional human being.
