Porter Gary McKnight, 72, passed away at home on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 in Fairhope, Alabama. 

Gary was born August 28, 1941 in Columbus, Georgia, the only child of Porter Lee McKnight and Myrtle Ruth Bentley.  He graduated from Jordan Vocational High School in Columbus in 1959 and went on to study art and business at Auburn University where he pledged Theta Chi. He moved to Mobile in 1965 and relocated to the Eastern Shore in 1976.  He worked as a life insurance salesman, restaurateur, and land developer.  He loved reading a good book, walking his dog, Frazier, and sharing jovial stories.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Myrtle Ruth Bentley McKnight, and father, Porter Lee McKnight. 

He is survived by his daughter, Hollace Marco Brayer (Patrick) of Ontario, California; son, Porter Marco McKnight of Los Angeles, California; and granddaughter, Eleanore Frances Brayer (5) of Ontario, California.

A celebration of his life was held Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at the South Beach Park in Fairhope where he spent some of his happiest times.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his name to The Haven for Animals in Fairhope.

    I loved him, his father and mother; he was among 4 good friends at JVHS – I remember his trumpet, his extraordinary sense of humor, and the extremely high level of kindness that his family expressed to me, a dumb teenager!

    Gary was a member of the JVHS Marching Band….He played a trumpet……His friends adored him and he was held in the highest esteem……..We did not have contact until this last year when he let me know he had a stroke…….God Bless his family………
