Rev. Richard Vaughn Colen was awarded his eternal life on Friday, July 2, 2010 while residing at Westminster Village in Spanish Fort.

Rev. Colen was born in New York City and moved to Sag Harbor, N.Y. when he was 9 where he graduated from Pierson High School. He was greatly involved in sports, became an opera buff and was an outstanding violinist in high school. Richard graduated from Fordham University in 1947 and Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in 1952. He served briefly in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II. Five of his pastorates were in New York state, one in Charlotte, N.C. and his last in Meridian, MS. Richard received many awards for his community service and he served as president of many organizations over the years. He was a nursing home chaplain for 15 years while living in Millbrook, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by his 33 year old son, Stephen. Survivors include is loving wife of 60 years, Irene and by his son, Peter and his wife, Elizabeth of Pleasant Valley, N. Y. and by several cousins in Sag Harbor and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at the Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church Chapel on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow in the Pete Allen Room at Westminster Village. Burial will be later in Oakland Cemetery in Sag Harbor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to BayRidge at Westminster Village or to Covenant Hospice, 1040 Stanton Rd. Ste. D, Daphne, AL.
