In Loving Memory

Robert Dewitt Vincent, Lieutenant Colonel U.S.A., Retired

September 18, 1928 - November 26, 2023

Tribute

“Old soldiers never die — they just fade away.”

Robert “Bob” Vincent left this world in Daphne, Alabama, on November 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family and his kind, dutiful caretakers.

Bob was born in San Antonio, Texas, to a career military officer. His dad, Skip and his mom, Mary, imparted a strong sense of duty to both of their boys.  Bob, following in his father’s footsteps, later attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, and graduated in 1951. Bob met Bettie during his time at West Point and they married just days after graduation. Bob served his country for the next 24 years, including two tours of duty in combat zones (Laos and Vietnam). Bob and Bettie had three boys who were witness to their father’s duty and dedication. They would like to think they learned hard work and perseverance from their father’s example.

LTC Vincent never focused on his own hobbies but put his time and energy into his family.  He never missed a game, match, or graduation — if he was not out of the country.  This dedication continued with his grandchildren. Bob was a member of Fairhope United Methodist Church since his moving to Fairhope in 2019.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Alicia, Mark and Terri, Bruce and Kristy; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Stuart “Skip” and Mary Vincent; his granddaughter, Haley Vincent; his brother, Joseph Vincent; and most recently by his wife of 71 years, Mary “Bettie” Vincent.

The family would like to thank the staff at both The Brennity at Fairhope Senior Living and the Fairhope UMC Shepherd’s Place for their kindness, love, help, and care extended toward Bob during his last years.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Shepherd’s Place, Fairhope United Methodist Church, 155 S. Section Street, Fairhope, AL  36532.

A memorial service and inurnment will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the Fairhope United Methodist Church Columbarium.

Expressions of condolences for the family may be made at www.hughesfh.com. Hughes Funeral Home, 26209 Pollard Road, Daphne, AL, is assisting the family.

I am a volunteer at Shepherd’s Place, and one of my happy memories is of spending time with Bob. He was such a gentleman, never demanding (even asking) anything, gracious, generous, and smiling. We missed him when he left us. I am glad that he is now at peace with the Lord.

I am a volunteer at Shepherd’s Place as well and really enjoyed our time with Bob. He had a contagious smile and a bit of a mischievous wit. Always pleasant to be around and he will be missed.
