In Loving Memory

Sabeta “Bede” Gibbons

April 18, 1946 - February 17, 2019

Tribute

Sabeta Anne Padgett Gibbons, age 72, of Mobile, AL, died peacefully in her home on Sunday, February 17, 2019 after fearlessly fighting a thirteen-year battle with breast cancer.

“Beloved Bede”, as her dear friends named her, was born in Albuquerque, NM on April 18, 1946 to Charles Lanier and Anne Ruth Crowder Padgett.  Raised under the Godly influence of her father, who was a pastor for many years and her mother who was also dedicated to the church, Bede chose a life of servanthood to the Lord.

She married Charles McKinley Gibbons, son of William McKinley Gibbons and Ivy Hayes and they began a life of service together to the Lord.   Beloved Bede was a woman after God’s own heart.  She dedicated her life to the Lord in every aspect.  She loved working at her church and did so for many years.  She was always volunteering, leading a class or taking a class or ministering in some other way because of her deep passion to learn and know more about her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ.  The impact she had on so many people through her commitment and devotion to the Lord will forever be part of her legacy.

She also valued spending quality time with her husband, simply running errands and having coffee together.  She adored being “Mimi” to four beautiful grandchildren who she loved dearly.  Bede’s contagious smile and warm heart will not be forgotten.  Her lifetime verse she often quoted to help her through difficult times was:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, but in all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Preceding her in death are her parents and her nephew, Jon-Terence Lanier Padgett.

Leaving to cherish her memory are her husband of 51 years, Charles McKinley Gibbons; her son, Charles Scott Gibbons and his wife, Glenda; her daughter, Christy Evanne Gibbons Peters and her husband, Robert; her brother Terry Lanier Padgett and his wife, Carolyn; her brother, Joel Ray Padgett and his wife, Susan and her sister, Cindy Evanne Padgett Coggin and her husband, Lee.  Also surviving are her grandchildren, Cameron Scott Gibbons, Collin Lanier Gibbons, McKinley Anne Peters and Riely Nelson Peters.

Services celebrating Bede’s life will be held Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Luke 4:18 Fellowship, 2664 Sollie Rd, Mobile, AL 36695, at 1:00 p.m.  The family will receive friends before the service time beginning at 11:00 a.m.  Officiating will be Dr. Fred Wolfe.

Though the family welcomes flowers, donations can be made to Luke 4:18 Fellowship, 2664 Sollie Rd, Mobile, AL 36695, in memory of Bede.

Expressions of condolence may be offered at www.hughesfh.com.  Arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home & Crematory, 7951 American Way, Daphne, AL, 36526.

So sorry for your loss. Joe and I met Bede when Erin and Shawn got married. She was truly a woman full of grace, love and service to others. She was a true and dedicated ambassador for Christ. We on earth will feel the loss, but Heaven is rejoicing. What a beautiful smile she must have as she is with her Lord today and forever. We love you all!

Sympathy and prayers of comfort for Mr. Charles and for all of Mrs. Bede’s family that she loved so much and who loved her in return. Even through a tough battle with cancer she was an inspiration and was cherished as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sibling, and godly woman. Though her absence will be felt, her memory will live on and there is joy in the knowledge that she now resides in Heaven with the Almighty Lord.

I know this time in your life is hard, Christy, but just know that you have friends who will be there for you, even if some of us are an ocean away.
I wish I could have met her, because I know we would have gotten on like a house on fire.
I’m so sorry for your loss.
    RIP, Bede

With lots of love from your friend,

Charles, Scott, and Christy, Larry and I are so sorry for your loss. I met Bede while working in the Childhood ministry at Cottage Hill Baptist Church. Bede was always kind and gentle. She was ready to listen and pray with you even if she had tons of work to do. She had a servants heart and will be deeply missed.

Her talent for making things beautiful was unmatched. She smocked some of the most delicate and beautiful dresses I had ever seen. She is famous for many delicious dishes she cooked. My favorite was her Kentucky Butter Cake. She was overflowing with talent, kindness, and servanthood.

Charles, Scott, and Christy, you were the center of her world. I pray the Lord will comfort you as you grieve, and give you his peace as you remember and celebrate her beautiful life, knowing we shall see her again. Until then she is healed and whole and safe in the arms of Jesus.

    All our love,
    Larry and Gayle Hill

To her family I say that the pain you feel while you are temporarily separated from Bede is real and difficult. I’m praying for all of you during this time. Only the Lord can help you carry on, daily trust in Him! Proverbs 3:5-6 were her life verses, now you are left to walk that out every day too! During these last 13 years she did that, setting an excellent and godly example for you.

Bede never complained about the path God had her on, she continued to seek Him daily. When she got the brain cancer news, I remember saying to her “this is hard but this is the time we have been preparing for all of our life,” she must have wanted to hit me!! But I know she knew what I meant, and now she is in Heaven with Jesus! This part of her journey has ended! She has cast her crowns at His feet! She has heard, “Well done, My good and faithful servant!” Only Eternity is ahead, she is worshiping at the feet of Jesus, her Savior!

Her legacy is that she loved God’s Word, her family was her life, she loved us all unconditionally, she was always looking for ways to serve her Lord and she wanted to be an encourager to all those around her! Bede, indeed, finished well!

My favorite memories of her are her love of hearts, lambs, pink anything, roses, and her pound cakes. She loved Gerald’s fresh butter beans and tomatoes. She loved a good cup of coffee! And her hand written notes of encouragement are all treasures to me!

Bede is my friend who loved me unconditionally! The word friend means “one who loves!” Friend is the word that God used of Abraham, it is a higher designation than being a “servant.” The Lord has reminded me of His gift of her friendship. I’m so thankful for her being a part of my life all of these 40 plus years! Her life is the very definition of Proverbs 18:24b, “there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother!” I am a better person for having had her in my life! I will miss her sweet words of comfort and encouragement during my difficult times!

I’ll see you in Heaven, my friend, Sweetie Bede! I love you….
