Thomas (Tom) Ives Sweeney passed away at the age of 80 on July 22, 2026, in Mobile, Alabama, after a courageous fight with dementia. He was born on November 19, 1945, in Mobile, Alabama, to Thomas Francis and Margaret Odewalt Sweeney.

Tom was a loving father, grandfather, husband, brother, and friend. He was known for his disarming sense of humor, always bringing a smile to anyone he met. He was very creative in telling jokes and playing pranks. Everyone has a story about Tom, usually one that got him in trouble.

Tom contracted the polio virus at 8 months old, but he never let it slow him down. He ran cross-country at McGill Institute and participated in road races, and played tennis, golf, and softball. In 1975, he hiked the Grand Canyon and trekked 700 miles through the Arctic. An amateur photographer, his pictures are treasured by his family.

Tom graduated from McGill Institute in 1963. He attended Springhill College and graduated from University of South Alabama. He worked as a medical technologist and spent nearly 30 years as the Lab Manager at Springhill Memorial Hospital.

He is now reunited in death with wife, Denise; his brother, Timothy; his sisters, Antonia (Toni) and Jean; his nephew, Neil; and his mother and father.

Tom is survived by his long-term partner, Patricia Albert; his children, Cecelia Sweeney-Craver, John Sweeney, Matthew Sweeney and William Sweeney (Anna). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Emily, Ella, Rory and Colin; his siblings, Daniel (Sandi) of Highland, Illinois, Donald (Karen) of Perdido Beach, AL, Gregory (Marie) of Mobile, Jody Coombs (David) of Birmingham, AL, Robert of Mobile, Joseph (Susan) of Mobile, and Mark (Jane) of Huntsville, AL; sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Libba) Sweeney; as well as his many nieces and nephews, who will miss his smile and humor.

A memorial service will be held At the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer 7125 Hitt Road, Mobile, on August 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
