With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Virginia Nelson Venable, or affectionately known by those closest to her as Jenny, on November 16, 2025, with her family at her bedside as she peacefully passed.

Virginia was born in Ashburn, Georgia on April 30, 1939, to John and Florence Nelson. She was the last survivor of eleven siblings.

Virginia worked a full-time job at Fairhope High School while attending university classes. She received her bachelor’s degree after three and a half years of classes. She started a university program at the age of 40 and completed her education with a master’s degree issued by Troy State University. She went on to become an elementary school teacher. She retired after twenty years with the Baldwin County Board of Education.

Virginia is survived by her husband of 65 years, Walter D Venable Jr.; her daughter, Kathryn Venable Hock (Joseph Jr,), and son, Walter D. Venable III (Juliette). Grandchildren include Micah J. Machefsky (Kayla), Mariah R. Machefsky (Billy), Walter D. Venable IV (Priscilla), Laila V. Willard and Christian T. Venable (Courtney). Her Great-grandchildren include Allana, Jace, Jeramiah, Nikolai, Benjamin, and Zaiden. Also included is a special family friend, David. J. Machefsky. She also will be fondly remembered by numerous friends as well as countless former students with whom she was still in contact with frequently.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 22, 2025, at Barnwell Baptist Church, 7780 US Hwy. 98, Fairhope, AL, at 2PM. There will be a time of visitation before the service, also at the church, which begins at 1:30PM. Interment will follow at Brook-Cedron Cemetery.
